With a ratchet in your waist

Another of the 5 x 5s from this years show found a new home this week; Rudie/Johnny Too Bad/Rudolph von Rudinheimer who was a favorite of both Swisscake and myself.
She started with the little chunky fellow and of course, I had to take him in another direction. The pants needed suspenders and from there, I knew what had to happen. I merged and typed lyrics for "This is England" by the Clash and "Do the Dog" by the Specials.

5 x 5 at 619

I have been working feverishly to finish my 5 x 5 pieces for the show  that will be at 619 Western Avenue during the December First Thursday Artwalk.* As La Familia Gallery will no longer be in its current location, the Baby Seal Club has extended the offer of space on the third floor of the 619 Building.

The theme for this year's works developed from the collaboration with Swiscake for my September show. Ms. P and I took the poppet idea and continued to experiment with it.

The exhibition will feature new works by:
Michelle Anderst, James Caudle, Maria Coryell-Martin, Sara Evertt, Mathew Harleroad, Laura Hines, Mirka Hokkanen, Liz Maxfield, and Jim Pirie

Robicheaux

I'm sure you have heard the rumors and yes, they are in fact true.

The first batches of Hans' Robicheaux's 'Pocalypse Kraut have been jarred and delivered, some by hand, some by express post carefully padded with Spanish moss and nutria fur.

With recipients raving, Han's has already carefully lowered a new batch into the depths of the black bayou to ferment just in time for christmas.
So start digging around in your old record crates; the 'Pocalypse is on the way!

Lover's Walk

"went walking one day on the Lower East Side...." No, wait reverse that. I meant here is a photo I just received of my collage "Lover's Walk" in its new home on the Upper East Side. Sorry for the confusion, any time you put "east side " and "walk" together, I tend to get twitterpated.

Hi & Low

For Veteran's Day I thought I would show you two pieces from my recent series of Playing Cards, in this case the two Jokers. As you remember, each of the face cards were based on traditional figures from history and mythology.

The two Jokers are redrawn and painted WW II G.I.s created by Bill Mauldin named Joe and Willie. You can view a gallery of his fantastic work here.

The joke here is the Low joker. David Low was a cartoonist working during the same time period.

And now a few messages for our friends behind the lines:
The light bill is overdue.

Cups (A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening)

Here is a recent commission for a wedding present; the specification was actually for "something tragic and romantic and bloody maybe. Or something sexy and deadly. something revolutionary and renaissance. You know, your style"

Happy Halloween (sort of)

So before tonight's festivities begin, I thought I would show you my costume from last week. Yes, my handwriting really is that terrible; that's why I make pretty pictures.
Stay tuned for the next installment and costume number the second (or will it be third?).
It has been a busy year.

Time up and time out
For all the liberties you've taken
Time up and time out for all the friends that
you've forsaken
And if you choose to waste away like death is back in fashion
You're an accident waiting to happen.

And now a message for the indomitable Misses P: Thank you for a lovely evening and apologies for the James Bond exit.

The Lowlands Low

Close lay a rover, off the Isle of Wight,
Either a Salie or a Saxon
Out of the sea mist we bade them good night
Sailing for the lowlands low.
Ready with priming we'd our galliot gun
Muskets and pikes in good order
Should we be riddled, captives would be none
Death or else the lowlands low

I don't know if I'm more Saint Nick or Old Nick but I've a bag of goodies for you all.
Oh, yes, I am crisscrossing the city to deliver the works I just collected from my September show at La Familia Gallery.
Thank you to everyone who complimented the show and stay tuned for the next series!

And now a few words for our friends behind the lines:

Negotiations & Love Songs

My new show opening at La Familia Gallery has been a long yet mostly fun project. The first piece was created two years ago as a sketch and the last 5 x 7 collage in the series finished last month. However, getting the show catalog laid out and printed was still ahead and then hanging all 50 pieces a challenge as well; the show has become more of an installation than I had imagined and I love it.

A consultation with Swisscake last week led to a scramble the last few days but as I said yesterday evening, "Ah, god love ya Misses P; I do believe it's working".

Oh, I thought I heard the Ol' Man say,
Tomorrow ye will get your pay,
An it's time for us to leave her!
The work wuz hard an' the voyage wuz long,
Leave her, Johnny, Leave her!
The sea was high an' the gales wuz strong.
An it's time for us to leave her!
-Leave Her Johnny

September Show Final Countdown

Negotiations and love songs
Are often mistaken for one and the same
-Train in the Distance

With my September show at La Familia just two weeks away I am finalizing my layout and double checking all the details that go with a larger show.
Postcards have arrived, show title lettering has been ordered for the wall, a box of catalogs (edition of 25 hardcover with each showpiece and a bit more) is at this moment chasing the sunset west to rendezvous with me on Friday.
And then of course, the mailings, both electronic and analog.
I am really excited for the show; I hope you will be too.

Absolutely Sweet Marie

Well, I waited for you when I was half sick
Yes, I waited for you when you hated me
Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic
When you knew I had some other place to be
Now, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

Well, I got the fever down in my pockets
The Persian drunkard, he follows me
Yes, I can take him to your house but I can’t unlock it
You see, you forgot to leave me with the key
Oh, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?

Your cracked country lips
I still wish to kiss
As to be under the strength of your skin

This was a nice article on how scientists at the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France used X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to analyze the amounts of which pigments were used by Leonardo to create his works. Which means within six months there will be a $100 set of "the paints that painted the Mona Lisa". Three months after that there will be a flood of new work inducted into the MOBA.

Anchors Away

And away, you Santee
My Dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls
can't you dance the polka?

Origin of the Species: Vol 2

The Slaughterhaus Rose Film Unit informs me they have just uploaded the latest in our endeavors: the video collage I did for Dubh Ros's DJ set at our May Day Freakout.

I was given a basic musical outline for the 30 minute set and based on the tones and mood, spliced together archived films to create the projection that would accompany.
Dubh was then shown the film and and began digging through crates (believe me, it's like Monument Valley in his studio) for his final loops, field recordings, sermons, and assorted audio madness.

After the show, we went back and reedited to sync the audio and video. Got some time? Check it out on Vimeo.
